High School Psychology Internship Program

Designed for students with curiosity about human behaviour, thoughts, and emotions, this program offers a comprehensive, hands-on exploration of psychology. Whether considering a future in psychology or simply aiming to broaden understanding, this is a learning experience that students will benefit from on a personal as well as academic level.

Program Highlights

  • Tentative dates for upcoming internship programs are as follows:
        Two-Week Intense: 3rd June - 17th June, 2024 (TBC based on Eid holidays)
        Four Weekends: 4th May - 26th May, 2024
  • Active Learning: You will be able to engage in workshops, guest lectures, hands-on activities etc, with direct instruction from the clinicians.

 

Two Week Intensive

Total Hours: 20 Hours (10 Hours Active Instruction, 5 Hours Peer Group, 5 Hours Self Study)

 
Week 1: Focus on Scope of Psychology

 

  • Monday & Wednesday (3:30-5:00PM) + Friday (1:30-3:00PM) - 4.5 Hours
    Monday (1.5 Hours): Interactive Workshop on Introduction to Psychology (Cognitive, Behavioural, Psychoanalytic) + Introduction to Internship Project
    Wednesday (1.5hours): Guest Lecture by a Clinician on Real-Life Applications in Clinical Settings + Career Planning Exercises
    Friday (1.5 hours): Hands-on Activities (Role-plays, Simulations of Psychological Assessments)
  •  Saturday (2.5 Hour from 10 AM to 12:30PM)
    • Virtual Peer Directed Sessions: Group Discussions and Reflection on Week's Learnings led by students so that they may work on leadership skills. Each student will be expected to prepare and participate given the task.
  • Self-Directed Study (Total 2.5 Hours for Week 1):Work on the Mental Health and Disorder Project & Patient, Psychologist, Advocate roles will be assigned. Students may collaborate with peers in this time.
 
Week 2: In Depth Workshops & Presentations

 

Self-Directed Study (Total 2.5 Hours for Week 2):

  • Preparation for Final Project - Presented on Saturday – last day.
  • Monday &Wednesday (3:30-5:00PM) – 3 hrs
    • Monday (3:30 – 5:00 PM): Colour Psychology
    • Wednesday (3:30-5:00PM): Application Session – Colour Psychology & Art Therapy
  • Friday (1:30-4PM) -2.5 hours (Virtual Peer Directed Session): Group Discussions and Reflection on Week's Learnings led by students so that they may work on leadership skills. Each student will be expected to prepare and participate given the task.
  •  Saturday (2.5 Hour from 10 AM to 12:30PM)
    • Presentation Day: Each group will share their work.
    • Evaluation & Reflection: Students will share and answer a short evaluation and reflection regarding the internship to receive their certificate.

 

High School Psychology Internship Program Schedule (One Month, Weekends Only)

Detailed Weekend Schedule

 

Weekend 1: Introduction to Psychology & Initial Project Work

 

Saturday & Sunday (10:00 AM - 12:30 PM)

Day 1: Introduction to Psychology (2.5 Hours Total)

 

1st Hour: Overview of Psychology (Branches and Applications)
▪ Definitions, scope, and significance of cognitive, behavioral, and psychoanalytic branches.
2nd Hour: Interactive Workshop
▪ Engaging activities including quizzes and interactive media to solidify understanding of psychological theories.
3rd Half-Hour: Introduction to the Internship Project
▪ Briefing on project objectives, timeline, and initial role assignment (Patient, Psychologist, Advocate).

 

Day 2: Applying Psychology to Real Life (2.5 Hours Total)

 

1st Hour: Guest Lecture by a Clinician
▪ Discussion on the applications of psychology in clinical settings and various career paths.
2nd Hour: Career Planning Workshop
▪ Exercises to explore psychological careers, outlining educational pathways and professional opportunities.
3rd Half-Hour: Setup for Peer Directed Learning
▪ Initial peer group formation and discussion guidelines setup.

Self-Directed Study (Total 2.5 Hours for Weekend 1)

  • Project Kickoff:
  • • Research and initial analysis related to assigned roles.
    • Online collaboration with peers to discuss project directions and insights.
 
Weekend 2: Deeper Understanding Through Practical Applications

 

Saturday & Sunday (10:00 AM - 12:30 PM)
Day 3: Psychological Assessments and Role-plays (2.5 Hours Total)

 

1st Hour: Workshop on Psychological Assessments
▪ Learn about and simulate using tools like the Beck Depression Inventory or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.
• 2nd Hour and half: Role-playing Exercise
▪ Engage in role-plays to understand dynamics between patient and therapist.

Day 4: Colour Psychology and Art Therapy (2.5 Hours Total)

1st Hour: Introduction to Colour Psychology
▪ Understanding the impact of colour on mood, feelings, and behaviour.
2nd Hour and half: Art Therapy Workshop
▪ Practical application using art supplies to create pieces that reflect psychological concepts.

Self-Directed Study (Total 2.5 Hours for Weekend 2)

  •  Project Development:
    Further exploration and integration of colour psychology into their projects.
    Preparation of chosen topics for virtual presentations.
 
Weekend 3: Peer Sessions

 

Saturday & Sunday (10:00 AM - 12:30 PM)

Day 5 & Day 6: Peer Sessions – Clinician Led (Virtual)

 

•  Each Day (2.5 Hours):
    ▪ Review and rehearsal of final projects.
   ▪ Leadership & Presentation Skills
   ▪ Peer feedback sessions focused on refining presentation skills and content accuracy.
  ▪ Final adjustments and role rehearsals for a comprehensive understanding and delivery.

Self-Directed Study (Total 2.5 Hours for Weekend 3)

 Final Project Rehearsal:
• Complete run-throughs of the presentation.
• Incorporation of feedback and final touches to the presentation materials.

 

Weekend 4: Presentation and Evaluation

 

Saturday & Sunday (10:00 AM - 12:30 PM)

Day 7 & 8: Final Project Presentation (2.5 Hours Total)

 

2 Hours: Presentation by all groups, showcasing their comprehensive projects.
0.5 Hour: Peer and Instructor Feedback
▪ Constructive critiques and discussions on each project.

 

Day 8: Reflection and Certification (2.5 Hours Total)

 

2 Hours: Presentation by all groups, showcasing their comprehensive projects with peer feedback.
0.5 Hour: Evaluation and Certificate Distribution
    ▪ Completion of evaluation forms and distribution of certificates to mark the successful completion of the internship.

Program Overview

Objective: To offer high school students a window into the academic and practical world of psychology, expanding their knowledge and sparking lifelong interests.

Target Audience: Open to high school students in grades 11-12, especially those with an interest in psychology, regardless of their current knowledge level.

  • Current enrolment in grade 11, or 12.
  • Genuine interest in psychology.
  • Commitment to full attendance based on the chosen program duration.
  • Satisfactory academic standing with teacher recommendation.
  • Demonstrated open-mindedness and respect for diverse perspectives.
